A History of Dedication to Excellence
For close to a century, St. Luke’s Medical Center has provided its patients with the best professionals and the most advanced medical equipment and technology.
Founded in 1903 by American Episcopal missionary Charles Brent, it started as a 9-bed ward and dispensary named Mosher Hall. In 1907, it became the University Hospital to avoid confusing it with the newly opened University of the Philippines Hospital.
Over the next three decades, bed capacity at St. Luke’s Hospital increased to 140 beds. With the Japanese forces occupation during World War II, the hospital’s name was changed to Nippon Byoin.
In 1959, St. Luke’s Hospital moved to its new site in Cathedral Heights. Already a 190-bed hospital by then, it included a neuro-psychiatric unit, cobalt therapy unit, and physiotherapy department, all new health services for the community.
The era of St. Luke’s as a church-owned institution ended in August 1975. Stewardship was transferred to a board of trustees, and St. Luke’s became an independent, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, non-stock corporation with income continuously reverting back to the hospital for acquisition of world-class equipment, funding of medical research, and providing charity medical care. In line with this, the institution was renamed yet again in 1984 to St. Luke’s Medical Center.
In 1991, the hospital was cited by the Asian Institute of Management and the World Executive Digest in their First Annual Management Awards as one of Asia’s Outstanding Companies: "A spectacular growth that has not come by accident, but by design: the product of thoughtful planning, bold-opportunity-seeking, careful weighing of risks, and controlled execution ..."
Today, a visit to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City is a crash course in modern medicine. It provides the same medical services and care available in the best health institutions around the world.
Nestled atop a hilly terrain, the 650-bed SLMC facility today introduces you to its nine (9) institutes (Heart, Radiology, Pathology, Pulmonary Medicine, Ophthalmology, Neurosciences, Digestive Diseases, Cancer, and Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine), thirteen (13) departments (Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine, Out-Patient Care, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Legal Medicine & Jurispudence, and Dentistry & Oral Surgery) and three (3) centers (Geriatric, Pain Management, and Stone and Prostate Treatment). Adjacent are the Medical Arts Building Complex and the Cathedral Heights Building Complex, where over 1,000 hospital-affiliated medical consultants see outpatients in more than 500 private clinics. Also located within the compound is the St. Luke's College of Medicine - William H. Quasha Memorial.
Dedicated to excellence, SLMC has the perfect synergy of state-of-the-art-technology and first-class human resources in its continuing pursuit to provide high quality health care and service to the country, maintaining its lead in the hospital industry, and living up to its credo "World Class Technology and Expertise in Caring Hands".
